Red, White & BOOM! 2014 drew sizable crowds to downtown Columbus on Thursday night, for the 34th presentation of the largest fireworks display in the Midwest!
Groups of people were seen along the Columbus riverfront early Thursday morning, getting the first viewing spots for the fireworks. Events started at 10 a.m. and crowds were seen gathering in downtown streets as the afternoon moved along.
The Red, White & BOOM! Independence Day Parade drew thousands of people along the route. Several Columbus suburbs and communities took part in the parade, as they offered their own Independence Day salutes.
The 24-minute-long fireworks, which began at 10 p.m., featured patriotic music and a tribute to Central Ohio’s military heroes.
The weather was perfect and the crowd soaked up what turned out to be a very pleasant and patriotic evening.
Rebecca Harris, of Columbus, has been to Red, White and BOOM! many times but always while working as a bus driver for COTA.
“Never to sit back and watch the fireworks and enjoy the walk around, talk to different people – so this is new for me and a good thing,” Harris said.
This was also the first Red, White and BOOM! for Alfred and Karen Cook of Portsmouth. They said they enjoyed the people watching.
“Just a lot of people,” Karen said.
“A lot of strange people,” Alfred added.
Cheri Mollett of Columbus is anything but a first-timer. She and her family have been attending Red, White and Boom since it first started.
“I love the crowd, I love the music and when the fireworks go off, it’s just exhilarating,” Mollett said. “Usually by the finale I’m just screaming at the top of my lungs because I can.”
Kenny Mollett reminisced about some of the weather they’ve endured in past years. “We’ve been down here through tornado watches and so hot that you can hardly stand it but it was nice this year.”
