Just a day after telling NBC4 he was getting out of the tree business, the man accused or running a tree-trimming scam appeared to be back to his old ways.

A Clintonville man tells NBC4 he believes he came face to face with Tom Huber Jr., the man accused of of collecting thousands of dollars for landscaping work he allegedly never completed throughout Central Ohio.

Huber was arrested and charged by Westerville police on Aug. 15. On Monday, Huber learned that he could be facing a felony charge of theft by deception as well as a few misdemeanor crimes in environmental court. He is also facing a civil suit from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

Clintonville Karl Wohlwend tells NBC4 he believes it was Huber that came to his door offering to help with a dying tree Monday afternoon.

“[He] came with a hard hat, said wanted to talk about your tree, I think I can save it,” Wohlwend said.

Hours earlier, Huber had told NBC4’s Marcus Thorpe he was done.

“I’m not going to be doing anything with trees, let my attorney take care of it,” Huber said.

Wohlwend said the man who showed up at his door asked for money after he did some work.

“He told me needed a check for $150.00, made to Melanie Huber, didn’t make sense, he told me his last name was Dooley,” Wohlwend said.

Wohlwend says he’s convinced it was him. He says he checked nbc4i.com for his picture, and watched previous stories done on Huber.

“Had a pesticide sprayer in his truck, not mixing it, spraying like crazy,” Wohlwend said.

NBC4 told Wohlwend what Huber had said Monday morning.

“I’ve disbanded everyone, not doing anyone else, work on referrals, maybe a friend that needs it, other than that, not doing tree business,” Huber said.

We tried to reach Huber at an apartment, and by the phone number on the flyer he handed to Wohlwend, but NBC4 was unable to reach him.
