Electronic Insurance Cards Now Accepted In Ohio

Effective today, if you need to prove that you have car insurance, you can do so with your phone.

The change puts into law what has already been happening in some areas unofficially.

Electronic insurance cards can now be shown to traffic violations bureaus, courts, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and law enforcement.

Motorists can use any wireless communication device to display their proof of insurance. That includes cell phones, personal digital assistants, computers and any other similar device.

According to the Ohio Insurance Institute, 38 states, including Ohio now have laws or regulations in place which allow the use of electronic insurance cards.

Paper insurance cards are still accepted and the state still encourages people to keep an updated copy with them.
