A Newark man is charged with aggravated arson after police say he set a small fire inside the Newark police station.

According to court documents, Newark police officers smelled burning paper coming from an interview room at the police station on Sunday.

An officer opened the door and saw smoke filling the room. The officer quickly found a smoldering roll of toilet paper sitting on the window sill.

Police then determined that the last person in the interview room was 32-year-old Christos Bergados, according to court records.

Bergados was at the station earlier due to concerns about his mental state. Officers said that Bergados was in the interview room while police determined what to do with him.

Police arrested Bergados a short time later. Officers reported finding a lighter on his person at the time of the arrest.

Bergados appeared was charged with aggravated arson and bond was set at $50,000. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
