About a month after losing their last deputy K9 in a fire, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office has welcomed new deputy K9 Ijo to the force .

According to deputies, Ijo (pronounced E-jo) is a 2-year-old Dutch Shepard from France.

Ijo will be training with Deputy John Kulchar for the next six weeks.

Kulchar was also the trainer for Ryder, who died in a house fire April 9, at the home of Kulchar.
Deputies said Ijo will be trained in bite work, scent detection, tracking, handler’s protection and searches.

Kulchar and Ijo will be the K9 unit for the Athens County Sheriff’s Office after the training is completed.
