Firefighters confirm 67-year-old Vernon Cooper of Springfield died after his semi truck was hit by a train in the 4000 block of Higby Road between Chillicothe and Waverly.

Cooper was delivering seed to a home on the other side of the tracks. He worked for a company called Lawnmaster.

After he dropped off the seed, he crossed back over the tracks and that’s when the train hit him.

Norfolk Southern reported that the train was not carrying any hazardous materials.

Lt. Mike Preston of the Ross County Sheriff’s Office said a similar fatal accident happened at this same spot in 2005. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
