Firefighters are still trying to account for all residents after a two-alarm fire destroyed an apartment building early Saturday morning.

Twelve apartments are believe to have been affected by a massive fire at Fairway Lake Apartments, southeast of Westerville.

Firefighters said the roof was fully involved by the time they arrived at 5124 Winterburg Way around 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

That roof would partially collapse as firefighters were attempting to put out the flames.

A 59-year-old man was taken to a Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital for smoke inhalation injuries, but is expected to be OK.

The fire was contained by 5:30 a.m. but not before the roof could be saved. Officials believe the property will be considered a total loss.

Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental. Although some witnesses reported hearing an explosion before the fire, officials were unable to confirm the explosion.

The American Red Cross is assisting more than a dozen people affected by the fire.
