A woman was injured after jumping from the second story of a burning building on the city’s east side Saturday morning.

Columbus investigators ruled the apartment fire that occurred at 1467 E. Mound St. accidental due to careless smoking, and say there were no smoke detectors present.

Officials were alerted of a disabled person trapped inside when the fire was reported at 7:36 a.m. Saturday. Columbus police officers found a 35-year-old woman hanging from a second story balcony. They helped break her fall and carried her to safety.

Police helped to alert other residents in the building of the fire before firefighters arrived on scene.

Firefighters said the woman was transported to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
