Phoenix Recycling Plant Begins Work to Rise From Ashes

Phoenix Recycling Plant Begins Work to Rise From Ashes (Image 1)

Representatives from a recycling plant where a raging fire caused propane tanks to explode thrusting black plumes of smoke into the sky say they could begin removing the scorched debris  from the plant today.

The Ohio EPA is working to help Phoenix Recycling characterize the waste left by the fire so workers know the right place to send it to.

Heather Lauer a spokesperson for the Ohio EPA also says they are working with the company to make sure runoff from the ash does not contaminate drains and sewers.

Lauer says she does not know where Phoenix Recycling will send the charred pallets, plastic material, and rubble.

She says Phoenix recycling will decide which licensed facility they will send the waste to and could even send some of it out of state.

Lauer says as workers remove the debris they will carefully characterize certain size piles of rubble to determine what is in them and where they need to go.

Fire officials say the flames that erupted nearly two weeks ago started outside a building at the plant but so far investigators do not have a cause.
