Police in Colombia acted quickly to save a dog from a rushing river near landslide-ravaged Salgar.

According to NBC News, two police officers on patrol in Salgar spotted the dog flailing in the water and ran by the animal as he was swept down by rushing waters.

Taking a risk himself, one officer jumped into the river and winched the dog to safety.

The dog had suffered injuries from rocks and debris in the river but is expected to make a full recovery.

At least 78 people have been killed in Salgar after a landslide saw mud and water crash onto homes in the worst disaster of its kind for a decade in Colombia. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
