Staff at Rascal Animal Hospital say they suspect five-month-old Zelda was abused.

Owners were forced to bring her in after the Humane Society contacted them when someone reported that the dog had pretty severe injuries.

Veterinarian Crystal Decker said staff did an exam and found both back legs were broken. The owner allegedly wanted to euthanize the dog; however, since injuries were treatable and the dog has a good temperament, the Rascal Unit staff convinced the owner to surrender the pup to the Rascal Charity.

One break is in the hip area, the other break is the lower leg. Zelda will need extensive surgery. Zelda is five months old. Her injuries could be one month old. The injuries have begun to heal, thus, complicating the surgery.

Rascal has been consulting with vets at Ohio State and are formulating a plan to “fix” Zelda. The procedure is expensive, so RAH is trying to raise money to help pay for the surgery. It could cost up to an estimated $5000.

The staff is hopeful that Zelda will have a full recovery. The worst-case scenario would be one of her legs needing amputation.
