A Columbus man accused of killing a young father was given a $2 million bond Tuesday.

Sherrod Gamble is charged with murdering 34-year-old Keita Smith on May 6.

Gamble was on the run until SWAT arrested him on May 24.

Both the prosecution and police said they requested a high bond because of Gamble’s criminal past and risk to the community.

Police say two children were inside an apartment on Roosevelt Avenue when an agreement between Smith and Gamble turned deadly.

According to a GoFundMe web page, Smith was engaged to Gamble’s sister. The family is now trying to raise money for funeral arrangements.

Gamble was released from prison in 2009 after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
