Business is booming along the 4th Street corridor between Cherry Street and Rich Street.

But in addition to new customers, homeless people and panhandlers are also here.

Zedeeka Fulay said it affects business at the new Red Velvet Cafe.

“It’s not that we don’t like them as people, it impacts the business and the atmosphere we are trying to present as a new business,” she said.

Some panhandlers get aggressive, following some to their cars asking for money or food.

“It is becoming a safety issue, especially at night,” Jordan Starks of Dirty Franks said.

The businesses are trying to get more police out to get the aggressive nature of some panhandlers away from them and potential customers.

“We stand as a community, we really do,” Fulay said. “They have come with advice on what we should do.”
