COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Columbus firefighters rescued six people on the city’s east side Monday.

The fire happened just after 8 a.m. on Berwick Arms Place.

Destiny Howard said the fire in the hallway of the apartment complex blocked her family from getting out.

“I started out the front door and it was all black and smoke. So, I just ran to the back bedroom and we jumped out the window,” Destiny Howard said.

Howard said firefighters helped her two younger siblings and her mother get out of their apartment through the window.

The fire was contained to inside the hallway and did not damage any of the apartment units.

David McKinney said he escaped the smoke with the help of firefighters.

“I tried to get out of my apartment and 30 seconds later the smoke was so intense I couldn’t even come out of the hallway,” David McKinney said.

Columbus firefighters put a ladder up to McKinney’s apartment on the second floor and helped him get out.

“Luckily, the firefighters did rescue me and thank God,” McKinney.

Fire investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started in the hallway.
