COLUMBUS, Ohio – In 2014, Armani Reeves played cornerback for the Ohio State football team. In 2015, he is training to become an American Ninja Warrior.
“I’ve done everything. Won a Big Ten Championship and a national championship,” said Reeves. “Now it’s time to try something new.”
Reeves is unable to suit up for Ohio State this season due to concussions. Three months ago, he saw an episode of “American Ninja Warrior”. He was hooked and almost instantly got in touch with Ninja Warrior veteran and gym co-owner Michelle Warnky.
“He’s probably super competitive and super driven,” said Warnky. “I can understand injuries. When you can’t do one thing, it’s awesome to have another channel to put it into.”
“Just for me to be out here and to give it a chance and hopefully be on the show. It’s something I would love to do,” said Reeves.
His first try up the warped wall did not go well. He failed to reach the top.
“I was like ‘crap, what the hell did I get myself into’,” said Reeves, “but the second time, I got it and the third time, it was getting pretty easy. It’s just all about technique, just like football.
“Someone who is an explosive athlete and coordinated like that, it’s not too uncommon,” explained Warnky. “But Armani destroyed it.”
He sitll has work to do to join the Ninja elite but it’s work he is willing to put in if he has to hang up his helmet for good.
“If I get a chance to play again, great,” said Reeves. “If I can’t, this is my next challenge.”
