Body found in abandoned city utility building

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Police say a man’s body was found in an abandoned building early Tuesday morning.

Columbus police say they received a 911 call around 1 a.m. Tuesday reporting that someone was badly hurt inside the former municipal electric plant on 500 block of West Nationwide Blvd.

That person was pronounced dead at the scene once medics arrived.

According to investigators, two men and a juvenile girl broke into the building at some point overnight, presumably to explore the building. Police say the trio walked up a conveyor belt and broke a window in order to get in.

Police say one of the men died after some sort of accident in the building.

The building is abandoned, but contains live electric wires and other hazards. The building was owned by the City of Columbus until December of 2014 when it was purchased by Municipal Light Plant LLC.

The man’s cause of death has not been determined. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
