Bicyclist struck and killed on I-71

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A bicyclist is dead after being hit by a car on I-71 overnight.

According to Columbus police, the crash happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes Interstate 71 near 17th Avenue.

Investigators say the police radio room started receiving calls about a man riding a bicycle south in the northbound lanes right before the crash.

As officers responded, the bicyclist was struck by a Honda Civic driven by Cory Smith, 24, of Gahanna, according to police.

A second car, a Mercury Mariner driven by Roncoa Foster, 26, of Columbus then struck only the bicycle.

The bicyclist, 24-year-old Matthew Goodwin of Galloway was taken to Grant Medical Center where he later died.
