New York firefighter shot while responding to fire

NEW YORK (NBC NEWS) — A firefighter was shot outside a house on Staten Island in New York Friday morning, police say.

The firefighter was hit once or twice in the lower extremities while responding to a residence about 6 a.m., police say.

The firefighter, whose injuries aren’t considered life-threatening, was responding to a fire at the home.

It’s not clear why the firefighter was shot.

Police say the suspected shooter is still inside the building.

Several police and fire units can be seen at the scene.
