DELAWARE COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH) Drunk driving accidents don’t just do harm to those involved in the accident, the collateral damage can be widespread.
Delaware County has experienced nine traffic deaths this year, four of them caused by impaired drivers, according to the SAFE Delaware County Coalition.
“The emotional toll can also be felt by those who never knew the victims, like witnesses, 911 dispatchers, emergency responders, police officers, tow truck drivers and even chaplains,” said Jackie Bain, coalition coordinator.
The estimated cost of a motor vehicle fatality is over $9 million according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Several Delaware County EMS personnel spoke about their personal experiences dealing with the aftermath of a fatal accident at the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign,” held Monday morning.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain James Meacham said the reality of notifying family and friends that their loved one was just killed by a drunk driver is heart-wrenching.
