Bellefontaine, Ohio (WCMH) — A 13-year old boy is recovering after being airlifted to Columbus when he was struck by shrapnel in the abdomen. The incident occurred in Bellefontaine, Ohio according to dispatchers, and the child was flown to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Bellefontaine police tell NBC4 the child was injured while he and two other boys were on the front porch of a home last night. One of the boys displayed a handgun, which went off. The bullet struck a porch swing and deflected into the victim, injuring his elbow and entering his abdomen. The mother of the child who had the gun has been charged with one count of child endangering, as has her boyfriend. The incident remains under investigation and the case will be presented to the prosecutor as well.
