Neglected horses found in Maryland with 3-foot-long hooves

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Maryland (WCMH) — The Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Woodbine, Maryland was called to assist with three extremely neglected horses, according to their website.

The three horses named Piper, Quest, and Rio were found confined to undersized pens and with three-foot long hooves, according to an NBC news report. All three were extremely emaciated.

Piper, a chestnut mare, had hooves over 3 1/2 feet long. Her legs were so damaged from years of hoof neglect that she had to be euthanized on site.

Rescuers were able to successfully trim the hooves of Quest and Rio, and both stallions are now recovering at the horse rescue.

Rescuers say both surviving horses were taken in critical condition, and will be in rehab for months or years. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
