Bobcats celebrate! Smalley pays up in annual bet with Barnes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s become an NBC4 tradition during the football season, and typically it ends with Jerod Smalley singing. Poorly.

Jerod’s alma mater, Marshall, lost to Matt Barnes’ alma mater, Ohio University this past Saturday in the Battle For The Bell in Athens. As punishment, Jerod was forced to sing the Ohio fight song “Stand Up And Cheer” live on the air. Barnes then called in a few favors and soon Rufus Bobcat, the Bell trophy and Ohio alumni joined in for the payoff.

In the 5 years of the bet, Barnes has won 4 times. And he’ll be able to celebrate for several years. Ohio and Marshall are not scheduled to play again until 2019. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
