New study shows employers trying to make humans ‘function like machines’

(WIAT) – If you don’t feel rested, refreshed and ready to face work this morning, a new study said you’re not alone.

“The Energy Project” is a consulting firm that works with employees and bosses to make workplaces better and more efficient and hopefully a little happier.

They recently studied 20,000 employees in conjunction with the Harvard Business Review. The study found most employers are trying to make humans function like machines.

Researchers said that doesn’t work because unlike machines, humans need to go back and forth between spending energy and renewing that energy.

More than half of workers in the study said they lack:

-Regular time for creative thinking.

-The ability to focus on one thing at a time.

-Opportunities to do what they enjoy most

-Opportunities for learning and growth.

Many employees also struggle to balance work and home. They can’t disengage from work, likely because it’s always within arm’s reach, on a company-issued smartphone.

It appears the key concept is striking a good balance. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
