Columbus rape suspect found in Colorado almost 2 years later

Yontan Araya

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)– A man who allegedly followed and attacked a woman on New Year’s Day 2014 has been arrested.

Columbus Police say the sexual assault happened on Vine Street at about 3:30 a.m.

Yontan Araya, 24, was arrested on a rape charge. The police report said the 35-year-old victim was stalked and then attacked in a parking lot.

The victim’s sexual assault kit was entered into CODIS and six months later a match was generated.

A warrant was filed for Araya’s arrest that September, but Columbus Police couldn’t find Araya until this year.

Araya was located in Denver Colorado on August 1, 2015 and arrested. He was interviewed by Columbus Police detectives on September 21.

In court, the prosecution said Araya was a safety concern for the community and a flight risk.

The judge set bond at $700,000.

Araya’s defense attorney declined to make a comment about the case.
