BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A New York entrepreneur has found a new way to solve a pesky problem many homeowners deal with, how to catch and dispose of fruit flies. Michael Bernhardt from Buffalo decided it was time to design an electric trap, which he says will eliminate fruit flies for good. He calls it “Active Green.” It’s an eco-friendly trapping device.
Bernhardt said, “I got a lot of fruit flies and I saw what was available didn’t work, so I saw an opportunity and took it.”
You’re not alone if you’ve found fruit-flies buzzing around you at restaurants, or seeing a cloud of them crowding your kitchen counter. Bernhardt says some of the cleanest restaurants and homes in Buffalo still suffer the wrath of the fruit fly, so he decided to fix that.
Bernhardt said, “That’s what really made me go forward with this, is knowing how much there was on the market for fruit-flies and yet everybody still had them. So clearly what’s out there wasn’t doing the job.”
Fruit flies will hang around until something else catches its eye to fly to. He’s tested this eco-friendly product at area breweries including here at Community Beer Works. Here he captured 172 fruit flies in 24 hours. “They come in on the dirty kegs. When the restaurants and bars return the kegs, they’ve been in a keg room in the basement there’s beer spilled on them and that’s really all the fruit flies need to get comfortable,” he said.
Here’s how it works: Every 10 minutes, a pump sprays the liquid, coating the inside walls of the trap and flushing the fruit flies to the bottom. Then you add your bait, usually apple cider vinegar or a piece of fruit.
Active Green is already garnering orders from bars breweries grocery stores and even hospitals, despite the fact that it’s not even on the market yet. You can learn more about the product or support the campaign by visiting their website here.
