Mount Vernon detective charged with extortion, drug trafficking crimes

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) —  A detective with the Mount Vernon Ohio Police Department was arrested by the FBI and law enforcement partners on a criminal complaint on Thursday.

The criminal complaint alleges Matthew Dailey, 44, of Howard used his position with the Mount Vernon Police Department to extort others, traffic in narcotics, and use a firearm while committing drug trafficking crimes.

Special Agent in Charge Angela L. Byers of the Cincinnati Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) made the announcement.

SAC Byers thanked the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for their ongoing work in this investigation. She also expressed appreciation to Chief Roger Monroe and the Mt. Vernon Police Department for their cooperation in this matter.

A criminal complaint is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by criminal complaint is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at later criminal proceedings. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
