COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–The Columbus Division of Police will be conducting two checkpoints Friday night into Saturday morning.
The first checkpoint will be operated on West Broad Street at Interstate 70 between the hours of 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. The second will be operated Saturday on Georgesville Road at Atlanta Drive between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
The first location, West Broad Street at I-70, was selected because more than five percent of the reported crashes at that intersection during a 5-year period involved an impaired driver. Three other intersections along a 2-mile portion of West Broad Street have an impaired driver crash rate between three and 25 percent, which is much higher than most other intersections throughout the city. The second location, Georgesville Road at Atlanta Drive, was selected because of its proximity to other affected intersections. At one nearby intersection, Georgesville Road and Sullivant Avenue, more than eight percent of the crashes involved an impaired driver. Another intersection, Sullivant Avenue and Wilson Road, has an impaired driver crash rate of nearly seven percent.
Both checkpoint locations are in West Columbus.
