Licking Co. Sheriff warns of phone scam

Licking Co., Ohio (WCMH)– The Licking County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam where the caller says they are a deputy needing money to keep from arresting the resident.

According to the Licking County Sheriff’s office, within the last day, law enforcement agencies have received numerous complaints of a phone scam where the caller claims to be a deputy and is demanding cash payments. The caller instructs the citizen to purchase money cards and send them to an address in lieu of being arrested.

Deputies say the Licking County Sheriff’s Office will not solicit funds or threaten arrest over the phone.

The phone calls are under investigation and deputies encourage residents not to engage in the caller in conversation and to simply hang up the phone.
