COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Police are investigating after one person was pronounced dead in a shooting in northeast Columbus.
According to police, a man entered the La Michoacana Market on Cleveland Avenue with rifle and began shooting at two people behind the counter around 8:20 p.m. Thursday.
Bacilio Alcauter, 36 was pronounced dead at the scene. His 15-year-old daughter Yulisa Alcauter, a student at DeSales High School, was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she is said to be in stable condition.
Janice Donahue lives just a few doors from the market and says crime has been an ongoing problem here.
“It’s just been the world we live in,” Donahue said. “People don’t respect other people and it’s sad…just really sad.”
Last year, federal authorities arrested Liborio Alcauter, owner of the chain of La Michoacana markets, in connection with a large international drug ring. Police say the stores were being used to launder drug money.
The shooting victim, Bacilio Alcauter, is his brother.
Police are searching for the shooting suspect, who was last seen heading westbound on Case Road in an older model, two-door vehicle.
Investigators said that it did not appear to be robbery related. Surveillance cameras inside and outside the market may provide some answers.
The investigation is ongoing. Police ask that anyone with information call Columbus police at 645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 461-TIPS.
