MANSFIELD, Ohio (WCMH) — A hostage situation at the Mansfield Correction Institution is now over.
JoEllen Smith, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, issued this statement to NBC4, “The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) confirmed today a hostage situation at the Mansfield Correctional Institution has come to a peaceful conclusion and the facility is secure. The incident began at approximately 10:30 a.m. and involved one employee and one inmate. Because of the collaborative work of the DRC staff and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the incident came to a safe ending at approximately 9:00 p.m. The name of the employee and inmate are not being released by DRC at this time as the incident is actively under investigation.”
An NBC4 crew observed a medic leave the facility around 9:00pm, followed closely by an Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser, but it is unclear if anyone was taken for medical treatment.
Mansfield Correctional Institution opened in 1990 and houses roughly 2,700 inmates.
