NEWARK, Ohio (WCMH)– Early Saturday morning in Newark, 911 dispatchers received a call from an alleged rape victim’s brother.
“My sister was just raped. [She was] taken it into vehicle at knife point and raped,” the man said.
The victim, 18, wasn’t able to give police much of a description other than the male suspect was in a blue smaller SUV.
She told investigators it happened just off of East Main Street near downtown, an area where there are plenty of business.
“Really safe. I live over here too, can’t believe it’s over here,” Kellie Conley of Backyard Auto Repair said.
Now that it’s happened, some who thought it was safe are taking action.
“Scary, thinking about getting weapon and my CCW,” Conley said.
Others say things have gotten worse in Newark lately.
“Oh, definitely, not always but you have to be careful these days more than before,” Feras Abballah, Owner of The Bottle Shop said.
Now comes the task of finding who is responsible, so these others can feel safe again.
“We used to feel safe. We opened by ourselves, now you have to watch out closely,” Abballah said.
