FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH) — Franklin County Auditor Clarence Mingo’s office just wrapped up hundreds of gas station pump checks a few months ago.
One thing they were looking for was skimmers, or devices placed on credit card readers intended to steal information.
When a few skimmers popped up in nearby counties, Mingo decided to recheck county pumps.
“It angers me that consumers have to deal with this type of criminal activity,” he said. “With advancements in technolog,y criminals have come in and take advantage of that technology. Our job is to be responsive and ahead of the criminals.”
Consumers, though, can’t see the skimmers from the outside.
“We will set up, and look at this dispenser, anything we haven’t seen before,” said Corey Schwartz, team leader for the county weights and measures department.
So far, no skimmers have been found at Franklin County pumps.
Owners of gas stations have set up security systems and watch the pumps closely.
“I want to make sure my customers are safe so I keep a close eye outside,” Nafez Jallaq, owner of the Sunoco on Orders Road in Grove City said.
Pumps have hotline numbers posted that consumers can call with questions or concerns.
