Hundreds show up to remember young football player

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH) — A 9-year-old’s death continues to impact the community he called home.

SLIDESHOW: Remembering Wyatt Barber

On Monday evening, Wyatt Barber collapsed after his third and fourth grade football team finished practice. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the Meigs County Coroner, Barber died from an abnormal left main coronary artery in his heart.

On Thursday, hundreds gathered for a vigil in his honor, on the same field where he collapsed.

The ceremony included a prayer, a candlelight tribute and a balloon release.

“We call all question why and none of us understand it, but what we can do is keep the faith, pray and continue to show the love and support for his great family,” said Pat Newland, Eastern High School varsity football coach.

Barber’s football team was scheduled to play in its championship game on Saturday. That game has been postponed to next week. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
