Staff takes over after mother stops caring for Polar Bear cub at Columbus Zoo

POWELL, Ohio (WCMH)– Staff at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium have pulled the new polar bear cub from den after Aurora, her mother, stopped caring for her.

According to staff members at the zoo, Aurora began taking breaks from caring for the female cub late Thursday, and when the breaks became longer, staff made the decision to remove the cub from the den and began to hand-rear the newborn.

The cub weighs in at 1.5 pounds and gained 10 grams overnight. Staff will continue to monitor and care for her around-the-clock. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
