Speedway robber leaves with cartons of cigarettes

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Police say a robber left an east Columbus Speedway with cigarettes worth at least $700 late Tuesday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday at the Speedway at 4901 East Main Street in Columbus.

Investigators say a man walked up to the counter and pretended to purchase four cartons of cigarettes. As the clerk asked for payment, the man implied he had a weapon and said that this was a robbery.

As the clerk handed over more cartons of cigarettes, the man gave some of the cartons to two juvenile males. The man stuffed the rest into a white plastic bag.

The man was last seen running east.

FullSizeRender2Police described the man as a black male in his 30s standing six feet one inch tall and weighing 160 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded jacket, a black t-shirt, black pants, black shoes, cloth gloves and a grey winter “flap” hat covering his head neck and ears.

The clerk told police that the suspect had an African accent.

Investigators ask that anyone with information about the robbery should call Columbus police at 614-645-4665.
