Fatal crash closes Interstate 70 in Zanesville

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — Westbound Interstate 70 was shut down in Zanesville overnight due to a fatal crash involving two semis.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at about 1:20 a.m. Thursday, 57-year-old Stanley E. Brooks, of Mobile, Alabama, was driving a 2009 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer westbound on I-70 near Zanesville when his vehicle went off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail.

Troopers said Brooks’ vehicle then re-entered the highway and stopped, where it was struck by a 2013 Volvo semi-tractor trailer being driven by 50-year-old Thomas Seidl, of Alliance, Ohio. After the crash, Brooks’ vehicle caught fire.

Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.

I-70 was closed for about seven hours but has since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
