Inmates, ‘Bike Lady’ working to provide bikes for foster kids in Franklin Co.

FRANKLIN CO., Ohio (WCMH)– About 300 children in foster care in Franklin County will be getting a new bike for the holidays, thanks to a partnership with a woman known as “The Bike Lady”.

Brand new bikes, helmets and bike locks were delivered to Franklin County Children’s Services Wednesday morning.

They were all assembled by volunteer inmates at the Pickaway Correctional Institution.

The Bike Lady, Kate Koch, started the charity eight years ago after she adopted a baby girl she was fostering.

“Bikes provide opportunity, bikes provide freedom, they provide joy, but what we’ve learned in recent years is a new bike somehow provides hope,” said Koch. “The best part is it is a positive lifelong memory because everyone remembers their first bike.”

The Bike Lady still wants to provide 800 more foster children with a new bike this year.
