Westland Mall declared a nuisance; township working on timetable to demolish it

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Westland Mall has been declared a nuisance and will be torn down, as reported by our partners at Business First.

The Hilltop mall has been dormant for some time. The Franklin Township building department is now working with the owners, Plaza Properties, to determine when the building will be demolished.

Plaza Properties isn’t ready to demolish the mall just yet, however, and is looking for a “Band-Aid” solution in the short term. Franklin Township Fire Chief James Welch said the township is willing to work with Plaza Properties on a timetable for demolition at the Wednesday meeting.

The mall was vandalized over the summer. It has no electricity, heating, or cooling.

It was built as an outdoor shopping area in 1969 and enclosed in the early 1980s.
