Deputies: Mother left toddler in car while shopping at Macy’s

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida mom was charged with felony child neglect after deputies say she left her 1-year-old son alone in her car while she went shopping at Macy’s.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies say at about noon on Thursday, Jasmine Jones age 21, parked her car at the University Square Mall and left her son in the car with the windows rolled up. The child was strapped in a car seat.

A mall security officer found the boy unattended. He was sweating, but was not injured.

Mall security video showed that the boy had been left alone in the car for 40 minutes.

Deputies say the inside of the car emitted the aroma of marijuana. Deputies found a small amount of marijuana in the car which they described as less than 20 grams.

Jones was arrested for Felony Child Neglect and Possession of Marijuana.

Child Protection Services officers responded and took custody of the child, and will make arrangements to place the child with family. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
