New Jersey Boy Scout leader attacked by bear

(CNN)–A Boy Scout troop leader was bitten by a black bear in New Jersey after accidentally lowering himself into a cave with it, CNN reports.

Christopher Petronino, 50, did not have life-threatening injuries and has already been released from the hospital.

The Rockaway Township Police Department said the bear was likely hibernating in that cave. Three Boy Scouts aged 12 to 14 were with him, but did not follow him into the cave.

According to CNN, Petronino has been exploring the cave for some time but had never encountered a bear. He was able to cause it to lose interest by striking the animal with a rock hammer, pulling his shirt over his head, curling up into the fetal position and playing dead.
