WOODSTOCK, Ohio (WCMH)–A tragic fire in Champaign County claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy.
It happened in Woodstock, just southwest of Marysville around 1 o’clock Wednesday morning along State Route 559.
A handmade sign reads “Rest In Peace Jordan.” It’s a tribute to 16 year old Jordan Edley.
Neighbor Butch Hoffer says his chihuahua mix woke him up to a nightmare.
“He started barking and then I heard noises and I thought somebody was trying to break in or something,” Hoffer said.
“Open the door and I heard the lady over there yelling ‘My son’s inside. My son’s inside.”
The mobile home next door was on fire. Jordan Edley was still inside.
Hoffer says, “She just screamed ‘my son, my son…’”
Jordan’s mother, 43-year-old Nicole Lee and his 12-year-old brother had made it out.
“I had to hold to her back and the cops was holding her back, one of the sheriff’s (deputies),” says Hoffer.
Firefighters from three companies responded, but the deputies had already tried to get to Jordan.
Out back is the basketball hoop where Hoffer says Jordan spent much of his time. The net isn’t even singed, but the home is a total loss.
Now, just days before Christmas, this family is left to grieve.
“There ain’t no words you can say knowing you lost your kid or something,” Hoffer said.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating, but has not listed a cause yet.
Friends describe Jordan as laid back and mellow.
Triads High School made counselors available this afternoon. Friends say Jordan was a sophomore.
