Tennessee officer, in need of a new kidney, finds a match – his colleague

LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A police officer in Tennessee is getting a much-needed new kidney Tuesday.

Sgt. Burrel “Chip” Davis found out in March 2014 that his kidneys were failing.

He was placed on the transplant list, but the wait could have been three to five years. At the rate of his kidney failure, it might have been too late.

“My wife and I, we sat down and had a serious conversation in regards to that,” said Davis. “And she decided that she wanted to reach out to friends and family to see if someone would step up and donate a kidney.”

Davis’ friend and colleague, Eric Crowder, offered to be tested to find out if he was a match.

“Next thing I know, I started getting phone calls saying ‘Hey, you want to go to the next step?’ Okay, we went on to the next step and here we are today. I was a match, and tomorrow is the big day,” Crowder said.

For Sgt. Davis, his friend’s kindness has not gone unnoticed.

“He is a hero in my book,” said Davis. “He’s a part of my family and I love him for that.”

The were at Vanderbilt University Medical Center at 6 a.m. Tuesday for the surgery.
