Veteran Ohio police K9 passes away

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WCMH)– A police K9 near Cleveland passed away after eight years of duty and a year and a half of being a family pet.

The Mayfield Heights Police Department announced Duke’s death today on their Facebook page. According to the post, Duke spent eight years on the force along with his partner Sgt. Tony Mele. During his time with the department he was deployed more than 1,100 times and participated in demonstrations for more than 3,000 people.

Duke retired about a year and a half ago and spent the last of his life being a family pet for Mele. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
