Police: 1 dead, 2 seriously injured after head-on collision

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — One person has died and two others were seriously injured in a head-on collision on the city’s east side.

Columbus medics said two victims were critically injured in a crash on Brentnell Avenue near The Charles School. A third victim was taken with serious injuries according to medics. One of the victims was pronounced dead just after 6 p.m. Sunday. Names of the victims have not been released.

“One of the answers we want to know is: why did this guy go left of center,” said Det. Mark Rice with the Columbus Division of Police.

Rice said there have been reports that the driver was intoxicated, but investigators are waiting on results from the hospital to determine whether alcohol played a factor in the crash.

Crews responded to the scene at about 5:20 p.m. Sunday on a report of the two-vehicle crash in the area. Neighbors, like Wydia Richardson, said the scene was “pretty, pretty bad.”

“We heard a loud explosion,” Richardson said. “It sounded like an airplane crash or an airplane landing on someone’s house.”

The road was closed for several hours south of Penrose Drive and has reopened. The crash remains under investigation.
