Fans not too worried about Buckeye football future, even as seven players say they’re leaving

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–Buckeye fans are buzzing after seven Ohio State Football players declared they would be entering the 2016 NFL Draft.

Many fans are pretty supportive, but admit they’d like to see them stick around for one more year.

It’s Columbus Trivia Night at King Avenue 5 and The Ohio State Buckeyes are part of the game.

Steve Meyers leans into the microphone and asks, “In what year did Ohio State play their only other bowl game against Notre Dame?”

Meyers waits for all the answers to be turned in and calls out the correct one.

“In 2006, Ohio State played Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl,” he announced.

The crowd is made up of more than a few Buckeye fans and news that seven Ohio State Football players are leaving the team early is being met with mixed reviews.

OSU fan Ed Krieger says, “As fans you get tied into it so you’d like to see them extend their careers.”

“I think we’re deep enough that it’s gonna be good for us to let some of these players step up,” says Brad Miller. “But as the same time it’s gonna be sad to let some of these guys go.”

As of Monday Jalin Marshall, Cardale Jones, Ezekiel Elliott, Eli Apple, Tyvis Powell, Joey Bosa, and Darron Lee had announced they were headed to the NFL Draft.

Safety Vonn Bell and wide receiver Michael Thomas could soon declare.

On campus, OSU senior Joey Shagnon called it a compliment to Ohio State’s football program.

“The fact that we’re so good that we’re sending that many people to the draft is incredible,” he says.

Junior Jack Bundy put his faith in the coach. He says, “I’ve heard we have one of the top recruiting classes coming in this year. So I’m definitely excited to see what Urban does with the young guys.” .52

Meanwhile, back at King Avenue 5 , Ed Krieger is looking forward to 2016.

“I mean, it will be an exciting season. The Buckeyes are always going to compete,” he says.

Players have until Jan. 18 to declare. The NFL Draft starts April 28.
