Mystery surrounds deformed mountain lion

IDAHO (WCMH)– A biological mystery surrounds the picture of an Idaho mountain lion that shows the big cat with a full-formed set of teeth growing out of the back of its head.

According to CNN, Idaho Fish and Game officials said the male mountain lion was killed near Utah, after it attacked a dog.

The photo released by wildlife officials showed the cat with the full set of teeth and whiskers on the back of the head of the big cat. Officials had some theories about the deformity but said they had never seen anything like it before.

Officials said they teeth could be the remnants of a conjoined twin that died in the womb and was absorbed by the other fetus. The teeth then grew on their own.

It may also be a “teratoma” tumor, which can grow teeth and hair.

Mountain lions can be legally hunted in Idaho, but are rarely seen. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
