Atlantic hurricane season underway as Subtropical Storm Alex forms

MIAMI, FL (WCMH) — We are only 13 days into 2016, but we already have our first named storm in the Atlantic.

Subtropical Storm Alex the first storm to claim a name off of the Atlantic’s 2016 hurricane season list. The low pressure system is located deep in the north Atlantic, closer to the African coast.

Alex is the first tropical or subtropical storm to form in January since an unnamed system did so in 1978. It is only the fourth known to form in this month in the historical record that begins in 1851.
