(KSBW) A day after a Hollister, California mother and her 8-year-old son nearly drowned in a flooded culvert, the family of the survivors met the homeless man who is being credited with saving the mother.
The family is calling Rick Biddle, a homeless hero.
“If Rick wasn’t here who knows what would’ve happened. She could’ve kept going and they might not have found neither of them and who knows what really would’ve happened and we’re just very thankful,” said Henry Azevedo, the ex-husband of Abby Valladarez.
Valladarez was traveling on Highway 101 late Tuesday night when they were forced off the road.
Mother and son careened down an embankment and their car ended up underwater in the flooded culvert that had fast-moving water. Valladarez and her son got out of the car but were swept into large pipes that went under the freeway and a nearby business.
Investigators said the two traveled about the length of five football fields before popping out near the homeless camp of Rick Biddle.
