Officer Thomas Cottrell obituary, funeral times released

Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell, was found dead near the municipal building in the village.

NEWARK, Ohio (WCMH)– Funeral arrangements and the obituary for Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell have been released.

According to investigators, on Sunday, suspect Herschel Jones shot Cottrell behind the Danville municipal building. A woman had earlier told 911 dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend Jones was looking to kill an officer.

According to Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, Cottrell was born August 22, 1981 in Newark and is survived by his life partner Tanya Rayburn, his mother, and his three daughters.

Calling hours for Cottrell will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newark campus of Ohio State University and Central Ohio Technical College, 1179 University Drive, Newark.

Any law enforcement officers wanting to attend Cottrell’s funeral can also receive a free room at eight different Columbus-area hotels.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in the name of Tom Cottrell Jr. for a COTC Scholarship Fund for those involved in law enforcement is being established C/O First Knox Bank.
