(WCMH)–Noela Rukundo said her husband tried to kill her last year.
She was taken captive by a group of gunmen while she was attending her stepmother’s funeral in Burundi. The gunmen had been hired by her husband, who ordered her to be killed–and they even told him they did it.
But after two days in captivity, her would-be killers spared her.
What Rukundo she did next made headlines around the world. She attended her own funeral in Australia five days later and confronted her husband.
In a new interview with the BBC, Rukundo described the moment her husband realized she was still alive.
“When I get out of the car, he saw me straight away,” she said. “He put his hands on his head and said, ‘Is it my eyes? Is it a ghost?'”
“Surprise! I’m still alive!” she replied.
Rukundo’s husband reportedly wanted her dead because he thought she was cheating on him, which she denies.
According to ABC Australia, he was sentenced to nine years behind bars late last year for having her kidnapped at gunpoint and trying to have her killed.
